Carbon fiber is the new darling in the automotive industry

2018-09-04 15:58

Alloy materials are currently the hottest trend in the automotive industry. From the body frame to the chassis suspension, the use of aluminum alloy materials seems to indicate that the vehicle is of high-end quality. Audi is an automotive brand that began extensively using aluminum alloy in the automotive field relatively early on, starting its research and development of aluminum body panels in 1983. Compared to steel body panels used earlier, aluminum alloy body panels have a significant advantage in terms of weight, and nowadays, aluminum alloy is generally only widely used in high-end vehicle models.

However, with the invention of stronger and lighter carbon fiber materials, the status of aluminum alloy has significantly declined, especially in the field of supercars, where carbon fiber is poised to replace aluminum alloy.

The all-new Audi R8 serves as a prime example. The previous model of the Audi R8 took pride in utilizing a significant amount of aluminum alloy in its frame. Now, the all-new Audi R8 has made the extensive use of carbon fiber materials in its frame a promotional highlight.

In addition to the application of carbon fiber in areas we can't see, such as the frame, carbon fiber materials are increasingly being used for exterior and interior body parts. In some supercars, even the wheel rims are made of carbon fiber. The status of aluminum alloy materials is gradually being replaced.
